Big G Express became 100% Employee Owned in 2009 when the four owners created an Employee Stock Ownership Plan (ESOP) as a planned exit strategy. Instead of selling to another carrier and jeopardizing the jobs of the employees who had worked hard to build a successful company, Pat, Jack, Patty and David sold Big G Express to the employees. Big G's ESOP enables every executive, driver and support staff to share in teh rewards, and the responsibilities, of ownership. Which literally means that each of us succeeds when our customers succeed.

As part of our driver appreciation week activities, we put together this music video in hopes that it might improve the image of the trucking industry and truck drivers with a little humor. The "star" of the video actually drives for Big G and we have a few others you might recognize.


I hope you enjoy and I hope you will share with others (it is posted on our Facebook page too). Part of our goal in communications is to show the world how great truck drivers are and some of the challenges they face out on the road daily. 

Driver Testimonials at the 2014 ESOP Meeting

Big G Express celebrated their 5th year as an employee owned company at their Annual ESOP Meeting on May 31, 2014. We were able to get some driver testimonials the day of the event and they are incorporated into this video. Their comments about Big G Express and what a great place it is to work are right in line with the results of our driver survey from this spring. The top things our drivers say about the "best things about Big G" are family atmosphere, home time and the equipment. There are other great things and we are working to make even more improvements. Big G Express has great insurance (Blue Cross Blue Shield) and an added benefit of being an employee owned company. The ESOP offers a free retirement plan with no money out of the employee's pocket. At the end of 2013, the average driver account was $9,700 with some balances over $30,000. Each year, employees of Big G Express have shares of stock allocated into their account based on their years of service and compensation.

Congressman Diane Black Visits Big G Express

Congressman Diane Black visited Big G Express (May 2014). Big G Express is 100% employee owned through an Employee Stock Ownership Plan (ESOP). Data provides overwhelming evidence that ESOP companies are more productive, more profitable, more sustainable, providing locally controlled jobs. Congressman Black is a Republican Member of the House Ways and Means Committee and instrumental in the tax reform proposal (first reform in 25 years). Congressman Black is "fighting for a flatter, fairer and simpler tax code to help create the conditions for economic growth, job creation, and higher wages for American workers." (source Congressman Black expressed her support of ESOPs to the leaders of Big G Express when she visited the Big G Express Mt. Juliet Terminal. She is very aware of the positive impact ESOP companies have on job creation and the economy! We offered to let her drive one of our new tractor and trailers and she took us up on the offer (even when we informed her that it was a manual transmission). VP of Maintenance, Tim Tipps, rode with her around the yard and she did GREAT! We were able to share Big G's "Ownership Story" and the opportunities the ESOP has provided for all the employee owners of Big G Express and their families. We thank Congressman Diane Black for her support of ESOPs and for taking the time to visit our facility and learn more about what Employee Ownership means to Big G Express! For all our safe, professional drivers at Big G, we realize she didn't use the correct 3 points of contact to exit the truck!

We will continue to give ½ cent raise every 6 months
Top out pay will increase $0.02 CPM to $0.46 CPM!


2014 Driver of the Year and Truck Driving Championship

Big G Express professional driver, Stephen Richardson, has been named Tennessee's 2014 Driver of the Year!! Stephen has been at Big G since 2001 and was named our first Driver of the Year at Big G in 2013. He was recently selected to serve as a Tennessee Road Team Captain and will be sharing the message of safety with the public through TTA events this year. 

Big G was represented by Tim Edwards, Tater Sanspree and Travis Howard at the TTA Truck Driving Championship held at FedEx on April 26th. We want to participate in these type of industry events and give our professional drivers a chance to compete and learn in the process. We look forward to participating in the event again next year!
